Filling the pool in Catalonia during drought

We are in an era where periods of drought are becoming more frequent and longer in Catalonia, and they are being exacerbated by the climate crisis. Therefore, it is necessary to be mindful of water usage and for all sectors of society to integrate a culture of saving and sustainable consumption.
Some of the questions that arise during drought situations are:
Can I fill my pool in Barcelona?
The Drought Plan of Catalonia establishes, depending on the average reservoir levels, the declaration of different drought stages: pre-alert, alert, exceptional, and emergency (I, II, and III).
Knowing the current regulations and understanding what is allowed and what is not can be complex. Therefore, we invite you to request information from us without obligation.
What drought stage is my municipality in the province of Barcelona?
There is an easy-to-use informational tool about the updated situation and the effects of drought in the different internal basins of Catalonia. The Generalitat de Catalunya’s drought viewer allows you to check the drought stage of your municipality.
The map shows a color based on the drought stage or scenario of each municipality, with blue representing normal conditions:
- Pre-alert stage: green
- Alert stage: yellow
- Exceptional stage: orange
- Pre-emergency stage: pink
- Emergency stage: red
Can I fill my pool with seawater in Barcelona?
Seawater has a higher salinity level than that of saltwater pools. While saltwater pools have a salinity of 5 grams of salt per liter, seawater has about 35 grams per liter. This means that for your pool’s filtration system to work, you must ensure that the pool’s motors can also operate with seawater, and if not, they must be replaced. It should also be noted that a seawater pool must be filled and emptied without being connected to the water supply or sewage systems.
In any case, regulations prohibit filling pools with seawater that are connected to the sewage network and do not have an authorized discharge permit for the sea.
For all of the above, we recommend that you consult with the company maintaining your pool to check the compatibility of seawater with the various technical elements your pool may have.
Can I fill my pool with tap water? Can I fill my pool with a tanker truck?
The use of potable and non-potable water for filling pools depends on the drought stage in each municipality.
